NHFC’s Director, Diane Miller JD,
Speaks on CODEX at Health Freedom Expo

CODEX: Codex Alimentarius, the United Nations Food Safety organization, and other global trade agreements, continue to make international policy that impacts our personal health freedoms. More than ever, these policies threaten to restrict worldwide the dietary supplements and other health care products that can enter the marketplace for use by consumers. In addition Codex is now setting policy for whether GMO’s should be labeled. Advocates for labeling of GMOs won what some would call a victory at Codex this spring when they were successful at getting language into the GMO draft proposals that could be interpreted that individual countries will be labeling GMOs as they see fit without WTO sanctions for lack of Codex compliance.

Many countries and consumers have already lost access to natural products that they formerly were able to obtain. The regulation of products and the shutting down of small and innovative supplement businesses with products of good quality has become a major global problem.

If consumers want to protect their access to dietary supplements and other natural health-care products, and want accurate information about the contents of products, they need to have a voice at international trade tables and regulatory forums.

Codex members consist of 182 countries discussing policy. However Codex also has NON-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that are allowed to speak and voice their opinion. National Health Federation has NGO status at Codex and is our voice at those meetings. NHFC works closely with NHF to educate citizens about what is happening at Codex. We must support those health freedom organizations that are at the table or working behind the scenes to insert health freedom principles into international laws, regulations, and global trade agreements.
